Former Secretaries of Commerce Urge Congress to Pass Trade Promotion Authority

Image
Free trade agreements are critical to strengthening American competitiveness, spurring economic growth, and bolstering job creation. With the trade agreements we currently have in place, U.S. exports hit a record-high for the fifth straight year in 2014, reaching $2.34 trillion and supporting 11.7 million American jobs. Goods exports to the 20 economies that have trade agreements with the United States reached a record $765.1 billion in 2014– an increase of 4.3 percent from 2013.  As Commerce Secretary under President Clinton, I led a number of efforts to open new markets to U.S. goods and services, and to help American companies navigate the trade landscape in foreign countries. I visited more than 40 countries to promote U.S. exports, expanded the Department's overseas commercial staff to support U.S. exporters, and aggressively monitored the impact of trade practices of other nations on U.S. business and workers. I saw firsthand how free trad...

Pakistan: A Personal History By Imran Khan – Book Review

Image
Indeed, for Imran Khan, life is a journey of achieving one goal after another. From cricket to building the first state of the art cancer hospital in Pakistan, and then a university and how he gained the momentum to enter politics, he encapsulates all of this in his book. The book “Pakistan: A Personal History” by Imran Khan was written in 2011 when PTI was just taking off. So it was quiet obvious for me to suspect the book to be speaking about the national political scene. Here I must admit I was surprised to find it contrary to what I was expecting. I got the feeling that Khan was trying to explain Pakistan to the West. One may not agree with everything that Khan has to say, but one is forced to admit that Khan has passion, drive and determination for his cause. It’s an amazing read for people to get an overview of Pakistan’s past and present. In his book, he talks about his early life along with the history of Pakistan. He starts from his childhood and sheds light on his vario...

Corruption and COVID-19

Image
Corruption, the abuse of public office for private gain, is about more than wasted money: it erodes the social contract and corrodes the government’s ability to help grow the economy in a way that benefits all citizens.   Corruption was a problem before the crisis, but the COVID-19 pandemic has heightened the importance of  stronger governance   for three reasons. First , governments around the world are playing a bigger role in the economy to combat the pandemic and provide economic lifelines to people and firms. This expanded role is crucial but it also increase opportunities for corruption. To help ensure the money and measures are helping the people who need it most, governments need timely and transparent reporting, ex-post audits and accountability procedures, and close cooperation with civil society and the private sector. Second , as public finances worsen, countries need to prevent tax evasion and the waste and loss of funds caused by corruption ...

As time passed by humans became dependent on machines. Humans have a need to interact with each other because communication is not possible with machines. We feel comfortable in expressing, probing and getting our problems solved with humans. Machines are a Creation of Mankind Humans are created of flesh and blood, they have a life. iPhone vs Android

Image
As of May 2019 the market share for phone operating systems is really only a two horse  race - iOS and Android, with Android controlling just over 75 percent of the market and iOS  with just under 23 percent.  Kai OS and some others like Nokia’s OS were next with a negligible market share.  It’s become a matter of fact that in this world there are Android fans and iOS fans , and people don’t tend to cross over to the other side . We all know folks who would never give up their iPhone for say, a Samsung, and we all  know people who tell you iPhones are overpriced and more of an accessory than a necessity.  But which operating system is really ...
